On Monday, January 20, the Capital District YMCA Black & Latino Achievers hosted their inaugural Achievers Day of Service: Teen Mental Health Panel event at Hudson Valley Community College. Honors College student Kamellia Barrett served on the panel, along with Director of the NYS Office of Youth Justice Gregory Owens, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner L. Sheree Adams, and Anita Brigsby and Imani Wilson from the NYS Office of Mental Health. As this year’s service project, the Capital District YMCA Black and Latino Achievers are on a mission to educate and equip all youth and teens in the Capital District to prioritize their mental wellness. The panel discussion served to stop misinformation about mental health among teens, create a resource guide for youth and teens to access 24/7, and provide parents an opportunity to hear from them and learn tips on creating a safe space for their teens to share when they are not feeling their best.
The event was sponsored by Albany Medical Health Systems, Hudson Valley Community College, and the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention.
